Project “Including animal therapy in the social rehabilitation of children-violence victims”

The implementation of canis therapy and therapeutic horseback riding in social rehabilitation process of children-violence victims is successfully continuing in three crisis centres - “Centre Valdardze”, Crisis centre for families with children “Paspārne” and Talsu districts crisis centre.

Within the project “Including animal therapy in the social rehabilitation of children-violence victims” (contract No. 2012.EEZ/PP/1/MAC/153/034),  kanistherapy has proved itself to be a type of activity which can be successfully used in work with the target group – children-violence victims.

Canis therapy is a method that increases the rehabilitation efficiency with the help of specially bred and trained dogs who are led by qualified kanistherapy specialists. Kanistherapy helps in the social rehabilitation – to solve problems in mental, physical, intellectual and communication spheres.

The basic principles of canis therapy – canis therapy works only with positive methods; the dog is chosen accordingly to the client’s problem; the dog is motivation for the client.

Latvijas Kinologiska Federacija (LKF) carries out the development of kanistherapy in Latvia and the specialist and dog therapeutist training. In 26th April, 2010 LKF signed a cooperation contract with Poland’s kanistherapy organization PTK (Polskie Towarzystwo kynoterapeutycne). The contract determines that the kanistherapy specialists and dog therapeutists are trained and dogs are chosen and certified according the standards and recommendations of PTK.

By including kanistherapy in the social rehabilitation process, during the project, work group specialists from “Centre Valdardze”, Crisis centre for families with children “Paspārne” and Talsu districts crisis centre are meeting in order to develop, adjust the tasks for the needs of the target group and to discuss the project’s success and necessary changes.

The project is implemented by “Centre Valdardze” and the cooperation partners are Crisis centre for families with children “Paspārne”, Talsu districts crisis centre, EKT Horseback riding school and Pet Club AS (Norway).

The project is financially supported by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The total costs of the project are 102 841,05 EUR. 95% of this sum are financed by the EEA Financial Mechanism and 5% - from the budget of Latvia.
